The problem with chemotherapy is it's extremely toxic nature. It will tear down cancer cells and will also obliterate healthy cell. It's a killing machine. If your body is able to survive, if the cancer is gone back you are, then it's deemed a success. Ever hear of so and so endorsement away from complications due to colon cancer, or lung cancer, or whatever cancer? What do you think that means? They be poisoned. There is no less rough chemo medications. It depends on the dose and how long. Source(s): Med School
Only in a few cases. The whole point of chemotherapy is to exploit a factor which cancer cell have which other cells do not. Sadly, there is especially little difference in cancer cells than normal cell except for their rate of differentiation. Using that factor to exploit cancer cells, you come across other types of cells which need to grow a short time ago as fast such as epithelial cells - thus all of the problems start.

In one and only a few branches of oncology have they found therapeutics which work on other aspects than cell growth. Breast cancer, for example, as grown more successful in treatment because of taxol-based or tamoxifen type therapies which exploit a dedicated factor only found in mammary tissue.

As science progresses, the thought of targeted therapy have become more possible. Using chemotherapy with lipid barriers and given localized treatment is becoming more of a possibility to use in these cases. Some treatments spot the cancer cells with antibodies, then enjoy chemotherapy agents target the antibodies. Success with these treatments are farther away though.
Unfortunatley no. Chemotherapy is freshly that, chemotherapy. It is a compound of drugs (some mixtures may vary slightly, but not much) that are basically toxins. They go within and they pretty much kill off good and impossible. The goal of course being, to merely use it long enough, or in short enough period to kill of the cancer and not kill off too much of the well tissue. This is why some people will have to a few rounds and then stop, skulk awhile for their immune system to recover and then start again.

There are other treatments for cancer, but it depends on the patient, thier overall form, age and of course the type and location of the cancer and how progressive it is. There is always targeted radiation, but again this is dependednt on many of the above factor. There are some oral medications, such as Iodine 131 (the radioactive isotope), but again, it is only useful for correct types of cancer, such as thyroid cancer.

If you, or someone you know is undergoing this treatment, then I would suggest speaking with attending physcian just about the side effects. There are some antiemetics (anti-neusea) medications, as well as some other medications that he/she may know how to prescribe to help minimize the symptoms comming from the chemo.

You can also look into alternative medicine, but, I personally would not suggest trying to substitute alternative medical treatments for chemo, however you may find some relieve in the neutraceutical world to assist with the symptoms. Just make sure to clear it beside the oncologist first, as many dietary supplements and herbal medications can interfere with Rx meds cause severe complications.

Good luck and I wish you or your friend/relative well!

Oh and as for the first answer, I have read abundant of the books and research that he/she is refferring to. It is based off work done by a femail viruologist who experiemented on chickens. She be trying to prove that cancer was caused by a virus. She did develope a vaccine and was competent to gain some sucess with this treatment, however, it never made it much further than that. There have been some other medical professionals, both within the US, but mainly overseas that have tried to continue this type of research, but it is within no way a viable option. It has not even begin any type of FDA regulated clinical trials, which is why any such treatment would only be available overseas where regs are non-existant or very lax. I would not reccommend going down that road, trust me on that. I have a friend whose father was diagnosed with lung cancer and she was geared up to take him to Italy to see a Dr. Simmonichi who was treating tumors with Sodium Bicarbonate and claiming a 99% sucess rate. Before she did, I inisisted that we check into it and look for his research and we could not find any peer reviewed respectable papers written on his work, but did however find out that his medical licesne have been revoked for malpractice and for violating informed consent policies and as a result he had cause the death of a patient, who up until that point was recieving chemo for breast cancer and be responding well. So, I am just warning you to be wary. I have no issues with exploring alternative treatments, but just get sure to check it out thouroughly before you get your hopes up or put all of your eggs contained by one basket!
