No, the over-the-counter forms of Benzocaine, Lidocaine, etc. are not strong enough to numb you, newly make you "tingly". You will need prescription strength Lidocaine to get numb. Talk to your doctor. Anbesol (for dental pain) may get your gums a little numb. Source(s): Personal experience
Yes, the above is true. The individual actual anesthetics that are available OTC are Benzocaine and Lidocaine. It depends on where your pain is located. If it is a toothache, then I would stir to the drug store and get liquid Benzocaine (it will be a 10% v/v suspension) and it is the strongest you can buy OTC. It will do wonders if you just purloin syringe and pump some of it into the area of the toothache. You can aske the pharmacists for a syringe (not with a needle as you would expect, just the syringe part, it is what they will give you to use for administering fluid meds to a baby). The only thing is, because you will be applying it transdermally or topically, you will have to do it several times, because it will ware bad after an hour or so. Just be careful not to swallow too much of it.
If it is muscle pain, then I would dance with Ibuprofen (Advil), Ice packs and a camphor or menthol based topical rub (like Icy Hot or Mineral Ice<--one of the best out there). If you cannot hold Advil due to bleeding disorders or stomach issues, then take Tylenol instead (as long as you have no liver problems).
If it is some type of skin abrasion, after about all you can do is go for the spray on Lidocaine or Benzocaine mixed beside some camphor. Name brands include Lanacaine, Solarcaine, etc. These can offer slight relief, but it is not going to make you numb subcutaneously (below the skin). You can still give somebody a lift some Advil or Tylenol to reduce inflammation which will in turn reduce affliction in combo with the spray.
