Can you hold cirrhosis of the liver and not know it?
I've read in more than one place that five or six drinks a day will give you cirrhosis of the liver surrounded by 10-15 years.
Now that's way more than I drink, but there's got to be any number of guys who stop off at a lump after work every day and have five or six drinks (or more). Do all these guys enjoy cirrhosis by the time they're forty? Can you have cirrhosis of the liver and not know it?
Answers:
The short answer would be Yes.
The reason being that the symptoms of cirrhosis can be set and vague at first and can seem like something else.
Symptoms include:
Yellowing of the skin (jaundice) due to the increase of bilirubin in the blood, Fatigue, Weakness, Loss of appetite, Itching, and Easy bruising from decreased production of blood clotting factors by the diseased liver.
Charlene is right with her answer. Most people don't own a clue they have cirrhosis until it is too late. Physical symptoms don't show up until the disease is advanced. You can get routine blood test done at your doctor for liver function which can show a problem much earlier.
Everyone is different as to how long it would take to get cirrhosis from drinking. Some guys can attain it in 10 years, others can go 30. It depends on a lot of factor such as body size, how much they drink, how well their body handles it, etc. The experts say that 10 years of solid drinking can put you on the road to cirrhosis. It's a slowly progressive disease that can take years before total letdown will occur. Continued drinking once you have it will make cirrhosis progress to total damp squib much faster. Source(s): I had cirrhosis (biliary disease) and a liver transplant.
The liver only uses 10% of it's capacity, this resources that damage will not affect it's function until it is 90% damaged. Basically, by the time you start to get symptoms it's probably too belatedly to do anything about it.
