Can I break a 100 mg Morphine Sulphate Extended Release pill?
My doctor prescribed me 100mg of Morphine Sulphate Extended Release for a chronic Kidney Infection and migraines. I am horrified to start out at such a high dose. Can I break the pill in quarters? and vote start off at 25mg?
I read somewhere that if I break the pill, I will be consuming the entire 100mg at once. But how is that possible if I am only taking a tiny tiny piece of the pill (even less than a quarter).
Anybody beside experience on this? Thanks.
Answers:
dont break the XR surrounded by half or quarters, its not a large does as 100mg seem. it releases over time in small incriments, dont be afraid, your doctor wouldn't have prescribed it if it was harmful.
If you break the pill, it's no longer timed-release, and you own a greater worry about inadvertent overdose than if you take it as prescribed.
Well extended release pills have a coating that makes them break down slowly. If you break the pill, the coating is lost and the dose hits you all at once. So for example, if you quarter it, instead of getting 100mg over a interval of 8 hours (I don't know the exact effective duration) you will get hit by 25mg immediately. I would suggest the 100mg dosage as the doctor prescribed.
