Drug Dosage/Calculation for Pharm.....?
I took this off my test, I obviously get it wrong... Just wondering if some one can break this down for me and tell me an easier way of calculating it. There are some parts that I know you can leave out, but I dont remember since I took my DDC class a few years rear...

Pediamycin 2mg/kg q 8 hours - via piggy back at a rate of 3mg/min.
Child weighs 35kg
Bottle Reads:
Pediamycin 5mg dilute in 18 ml Sodium Cloride for injection. Displacement will attach 2ml to produce 20ml
Q: How many ml per dose should be administered
A: 280ml
Q: How many minutes?
A: 23 minutes

Answers:
Break this down into individual steps and it's not so bad
1. 2mg/kg q 8 h: The child weigh 35kg, so 35kg*(2mg/kg) equals a 70mg dose q 8 h.
2. When reconstituted the 5mg Pediamycin is in total vol of 20ml, so the final concentration is 5mg/20ml. (disregard all the distractors about displacement and 18ml used to mix).
3. you want a 70mg dose, so 70mg*(20ml/5mg) = 280ml per dose (just remember to invert the concentration to make the mg-units cancel.
4. you need to hold a rate of 3mg/min and you have a 70mg/280ml mixture. 70mg*(1 min/3mg)=23.3 minutes
