That's kind of high. I'd be tempted to drop down to q12. If the long-suffering is on dialysis, then further adjustments might be needed.
Since two grams every 12 hours (4 grams per day) is listed as a usable dose surrounded by kidney failure, I don't think 1 gram Q8H (3 grams per day) would be excessive.
