A fully grown follicle releases an ovum contained by response to a surge contained by?

A) oxytocin.
B) follicle-stimulating hormone.
C) luteinizing hormone.
D) estrogen.
E) progesterone.
Answers:
C) luteinizing hormone.

FSH causes the ovum to mature. Estrogen levels rise as the follicle mature, reaching a "spike" just prior to ovulation. High estrogen levels trigger the LH surge, which triggers ovulation. After ovulation, progesterone levels rise to sustain the egg and create proliferation of the uterine lining... and if the egg is fertilized, the zygote takes over progesterone production to sustain the placenta. If the egg is not fertilized, there will be debt of progesterone which facilitates menses (shedding of the uterine lining.)

Oxytocin surges during labour/delivery to cause contractions of the uterus and to trigger prolactin release to stimulate milk-letdown. Source(s): Naturopathic Doctor
