It all depends on the specialty, the patient population involved, and the drive for a given doctor visit.
When I was third & fourth year medical student many years ago, my psychiatry attending and I used telemedicine to watchfulness for patients with major depressive disorder/bipolar disorder in remote areas of the state. That system worked resourcefully, because the interview (i.e., the mental status exam) was the core of the physical exam.
However, in other specialties, such as pediatrics and internal medicine, that would not be practical, because the doctor may call for to perform a "physical" physical exam to assess the patient. However, if physically touching the patient is surplus to requirements on a given visit, then telemedicne would suffice. Source(s): My remote medical training.
Telemedicine is good for things resembling interpreting images. One can have a specialist at a central location to read X-rays and cat scans/MRIs short having him travel, or having to have greatly of specialists. This can cut costs, and make resources available to a wider practice.
The down side of telemedicine is the doctor interpreting the images cannot examine the patient firsthand if he have questions. In many cases, being competent to touch and listen to the patient can confirm or disprove an ambiguous diagnosis.
