Answers:
In patients who are unable to protect their airway or cannot breath on their own which is often the cause contained by patients with persistent vegetative state and those in coma require a binding airway. This is accomplished by placement of a tracheostomy tube which connects to a ventilator. Nutritional support is provided through a PEG tube (percutaneous gastric tube). These patients also require special mattresses to prevent bed sores and splints and braces to prevent contractures of the extremities. This is all very costly. I don't know how this works contained by Australia as I am only familiar with the US. Source(s): PA
