Do residents hold to be/work contained by a hospital?

I want to become a doctor, but I want to know if I have to work in a hospital or not for my residency.
Answers:
I don't think you necessarily have to work in a hospital for residency. If you progress into Family Medicine or something, you would be working in a private practice/group practice/clinic so I would think you wouldn't be working in a hospital.
However, contained by med school, you would do a lot of rotations in hospitals.
Pangolin is quite right, of course.

You enjoy to work in a hospital because the whole idea of residency is to revise as much as you can about your chosen specialty, so that when you are qualified to practice independently you'll have enough experience and training. You wouldn't achieve that without the constant influx of patients you get in a hospital. Additionally, solely a big institution can provide the didactics (lectures and such) you get during residency.

You do have clinics and there is opportunity to do "away rotations" where on earth you might get to work in other types of places or do research or what have you. But mostly you work within a hospital. Source(s): Pediatric neurology resident.
You'll practically live there. Depending on your specialty, you may draw from to venture out into an office, but most residency programs have in-hospital clinics where on earth they see patients. Source(s): Been there, done that.
This is a group of hospitals where on earth you can apply for residency. Goodluck.
