Can tetracycline cause/lead to thinning of the retina and/or a retinal hole?
I was wondering if the antibiotic tetracycline, used as a treatment for acne, can cause a retinal hole...
I know that one of the more rare and severe side effect of delirium changes..but will antibiotic affect the eye itself or the brain?
Answers:
It is very doubtful that an antibiotic would cause retinal thinning or retinal holes. Thinning is usually a function of the level of myopia, ie how near sighted you are. The more myopic, the more elongated the shape of your eyeball, so the retina is stretched out...
Holes can happen more easly with lean retinas especially as the vitreous, the gel that fills the eyeball becomes more unstable and liquifies, pulling on weaker thin parts of retina. Physical pave the way jarring activity or trauma can lead to holes possibly. Sometimes they a moment ago happen, but they happen more often surrounded by nearsighted people's already thinner retinas.
See a retinal specialist ophthalmo at least once a year if you have a thin retina or suffer from retinal breaks or degeneration.
antibiotics similar to tetracycline may affect the eye in other ways but I doubt they would cause retinal thinning or retinal breaks like holes. Source(s): I own thin retinas and a retinal hole and a tear. Researched this stuff to death and i hold a scientifc background. Discussed with ophthalmos and retinal specialists. Email me if u have any query or concerns.
