Doctors: How did you choose your speciality?

I'm a high school student thinking about becoming a doctor, and I know that I wouldn't hold to choose a speciality until my 4th year of medical school; I'm simply interested in hearing what your personal experience be.
Thanks in advance!

At every stage you still feel similar to keeping a range of options open. When I qualified I feel I would be equally happy in anaesthesia, paediatrics or going back into research physiology; the die be cast when I asked my anaesthetics professor if there was a situation going in his department and there was. Likewise at the run out of my training I would have been equally pleased in obstetric or paediatric anaesthesia as within intensive care, but the intensive care job come up first and I was very happy here. Possibly you don't pick the job, the job picks you.
I'm not a doctor yet, I'm a medical student, but I know when I was in high college that my passion was in the means of access that the brain works and more importantly, how it can malfunction. It's so important how we percieve things because that's basically what duration is.

Because of that I knew I wanted to be a psychiatrist or neurologist. Ultimately I settled with psychiatrist because at hand is more interaction with patients.
I am starting medical school soon too. There is nothing wrong beside having a preference for which area you want to specialise within before starting medical school, however do bear surrounded by mind that you will likely change your mind during the course of your training when you work in different branches.

I am already a Nurse and I specialise contained by Cardiology, I've always been fascinated with how the heart works. I'd approaching to specialise in cardiology, but I will keep an open mind. I know the areas I categorically have no interest in; Paediatrics, Orthopaedic, gynaecology and general practise. Because I already work within the hospital setting I have a fairly good impression of what I like and what doesn't interest me so much. As I have already done an Msc and I am approaching my mid twenties, I also think it would be fairly good for me to have some direction of where I want to guide.

I've thought about being an Anaesthetist, but I I don't think I hold the right personality.
I 100% agree with Peter; I think it's severely true that you don't choose the job, the job chooses you...something which the poster in another clear question in this category would do well to lug under advisement. Source(s): Cardiac Nurse
