What is penicillin and where on earth does it come from?
This is for a year 8 science project so it has to be a long answer but not in complicated language...Thnx :)
Answers:
Yes... Originally was brought over from overseas... Was Cheese where the mold fungus grew when it be discovered that it would be of benefit to medecine.. Do not know all the details, but do know that much anyhow..
They later, of course, found other ways to produce the penecillin ...
Like many scientific discoveries that changed our world, the discovery of penicillin be an accident.
Alexander Fleming, a scientist, was conducting experiments with the use of petri dishes. One light of day, he accidentally dropped some cheese into a petri dish where he intended to grow some Staphylococcus bacteria. Soon after that, Fleming noticed that in that was a ring/halo around the piece of cheese that had moulded where in attendance was no growth of bacteria. This because the cheese allowed a fungi (from the Penicillium family) which released substances that killed the germs (it's more complicated than just that, actually)
In WW2, the use of penicillin was estimated to have save 12-15% of people from death due to infections of wounds.
Nowadays, it is produced it factories that use more sophisticated technique than mouldy cheese. Source(s): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penicillin

Penicillin is a chemical made readily by some fungi that kills bacteria. It is now used surrounded by medicine to treat many diseases.
It was discovered accidentally by Alexander Fleming when he be growing bacteria on petri dishes by a window. A fungal spore landed one dish and as it grew it kill all the bacteria around it. Fleming found out how to produce this chemical on a large degree, but nowadays it is manufactured artificially (not from fungi).
penicillin is a medicine which uses moldy bread as its base. It was discovered when a scientist (I don't remember the name) be trying to find a cure for a bacteria. He left for a minute while his Petri Dish sat out within the open, with his window oopen. A bit of moldy bread caught surrounded by the wind came in and land in the Petri dish.
umm i cant remember where it comes from now but bak in world period of war 2 it came from oranges try using google Source(s): i was there XD
No its not moldy bread necessarily its made from a type of mould and is an anti-biotic so it fight bacterial infections.
OK, I'll try my level best.
V all know now-a-days that infections like boils, wounds, cough etc r cause by very small living cells called germs that r present in the body n environment all around us ( but all germs need not be harmful to us). But such infections if occurred within large wounds etc were usually fatal for those who get injured n infected. This was main problem 4 the wounded soldiers in the First World War In 1928 A Scottish Scientist Sir Alexander Fleming be; growing some bacteria (the bad one called the Staphylococcus species) within petri dishes, (glass plates in which some mixture of spl chemicals - a medium - is put 2 grow the bacteria) so that tests can be done on them. 1 morning, accidentally a dish was kept open and was contaminated by the spores of a mould (fungus name Penicillium notatum). The fungus grew in the dish along with Staphylococcii. Later when Mr Fleming saw this he observed that the rim around the mould was clear n free of bacterial growth. Sir Alexander couched that the staph were blocked / killed by something that is produced by the mould. He worked on this next but the medical application of the material was attributed to Dr Cecil George Paine in 1930 for an eye infection and skin infection. Later Dr Howard Florey n his troop demonstrated the effectiveness of Penicillium in lab tests. But the attempt to put aside a serious patient from death was successful lone in March 1942, when enough quantities of Penicillin be available.
Later, techniques to produce the drug were developed from better strains of moulds, better culture techniques etc., n mass production be possible by 1944. The drug was lifesaving 4 many wounded soldiers in world period of war II. Actually the synthesis of Penicillin was possible in 1950 onwards. The basic molecule of the drug be modified in several ways later 2 produce more effective derivatives.
Hope I am successful 2 come down to an 8-year weak.
comes from moldy Cheese...
Was discovered within Europe and brought here...
