Answers:
It depends what is involved during surgery,

mine lasted 5 hours and what be involved was, untwisting me(scoliosis)fusing the spine from top to bottom, having harrington rods put it place, and bone was taken from my pelvis to use as bone graft to fuse the spine,i also have a dislocated vertebrae so that needed putting back to place too,but i was told it would only purloin 2 hours but they said afterwards it was more complicating than expected,so even the surgeons cant predict how long it will take until they open you up. Depends on who is doing it and what they are doing.

I've be in surgeries that take half an hour (simple discectomy by a high-speed surgeon) and some that take 12 or more hours (complicated spinal instrumentations by slower surgeons).

Spine surgery can get very complicated, especially if they are working on both the stern of the spine (going through the back) AND the front of the spine (going through the abdomen). Those are a mess. Source(s): I'm an anesthesiologist.
