Can an ultrasound detect kidney stones if the tech isn't looking at the kidneys?

Depends on how close to the kidneys the tech is looking. If he is scan your neck for some reason then no, however if the tech is looking at a uterus later it may be possible depending on how good the ultrasound is, how big you are, ect.

Yes supposedly... Like the other person answered before me, if they are looking in an nouns around your kidneys they could possibly detect kidney stones.
This happened to me when I was in soaring school. I was having severe strain in my lower left flank but was individual 15 so nobody thought it was a stone. The pain would come on and then be off for a few days, come back for a few days, then leave again. Finally they did an ultrasound to look for ovarian cysts and found a kidney stone.

Well, technically, kidney stones don't generally cause problems until they're out of the kidney and into the ureters (the tubes that carry the urine from the kidney to the bladder). But you'd involve to be looking in the general vicinity. An ultrasound is only a picture. You'd have to take a picture of the right area contained by order to find a stone in that place.
