Distribution of drying contained by lungs?
My book says: "In the upright position alveoli near the apex of the lung are more xpanded..."
So, they (alveoli surrounded by the apex) receive more tidial volumen when standing than those in the base? Although apex alveoli are less compliant... ?

Apex alveoli are smaller quantity compliant because they have to be. Most of the air rushing into the lungs goes right by them. If they be compliant those alveoli would be huge, overexpanded and less able to promote gas exchange. Then if they'd die the next better up alveoli would have the same thing occur, and so on. That's why apex alveoli are less complaint.
Also they receive more tidal volume, but that doesn't necessarily mean they use it. Those alveoli are full of oxygen waiting to be transferred to the blood. They are essentially full, so the air will push on that nouns since it's first in line, but won't necessarily go into those alveoli. That's why they hold the increased pressure, and need to be less compliant so they don't explode, literally. The oxygen that can't get into those apex alveoli will be pushed further down into alveoli that don't enjoy as much oxygen in them. Source(s): Nurse and biology major.
