How to maximize a placebo's worth?
A very sick, elderly relative of mine who I put to bed every night is always asking for sleeping pills since she claims she almost never sleeps at darkness. Maybe an hour or 2 hours a night if she is lucky, she claims.
Because of her condition(low kidney function among many other problems), her doctor refuses to make a contribution her a prescription sleep aid and tells her not to take any sleeping pills at all. I've established to give her a placebo sleep aid, a 250 mg vitamin C(ascorbic acid) pill, which means convincing her(lying to her), that it is a powerful sleep aid. Any tips or advice? Although vitamin C isn't adjectives, it's effect has almost nothing to do with sleep. Is 250 mg of vitamin C past the worst for her? Based on my readings this isn't a very large dose and she might not involve most of it anyway. Large doses of vitamin C are said to be bad for people with vague kidneys, but 250 mg doesn't seem too high. Any way to speak to her or any other techniques to maximize this placebo's effectiveness?

Have you considered tylonal pm, or just a benedryal without the tylonal? The sleeping ingredient is benedryal, which is fairly benign. Same entry in almost all otc sleep meds. Have you asked the doc if benedryal is a good substitute?
Here is entity... if she finds out you are tricking her, it could cause a lot of trust issues in your relationship, because you be lieing to her. Also, if her condition is bad enough that he doesnt want her taking anything at all, you NEED to consult near her doc about what you use as a placebo (and if you are going that route, a sugar pill from the doc would be best). You should also consult a psychologist about her mental status before using a placebo.
And in actual fact, speaking of psychologists... if she is really having trouble (or things she is having trouble) sleeping, I would really go towards behavioral technique to sleep before the placebo. It really is pretty dishonest. If your mom is willing to see a psychologist who can help her beside some techniques, it might be the best option.
just pass her some tic tacs.
Try tricking her by putting the pills in an ancient medicine bottle with her name, or you can buy some Tylenol PM or other types of pills that are meant for sleep.
What you then do is to take out the drug, wash the container as well as you can and put the vitamins in the bottle. When she see that you take them out she'll be more likely to believe that it's the actual sleeping pill than if you just claimed it be.
Another tip is to try to get something that doesn't look like a vitamin, most are colorful and huge, try finding something that looks like a typical sleeping pill.
You should also consult a pharmacist and relay him her weight and her condition to see if the dosage is something that's safe.
Good luck!
