Thank you for the question. I'm sorry to hear about this.

Without knowing the specifics of the MRI finding, I'm afraid this sounds like it could be an AVM (arterial venous malformation) or a psychological aneurysm, likely in a region called the mind arterial circle of Willis.

However, I'm surprised that an MRI alone picked this up. Usually, an MRA, which images the blood vessels, detects aneuysms and AVMs.

If you've had unexplained headache for years, the finding of an aneurysm or AVM on MRI/MRA is ominious, beacuse it may be enlarging, or "leaking". The feared consequence of this problem is spontaneous rupture, which can be fatal.

If I may ask for superfluous details,

1. Do you have a family history of cerebral aneursyms or AVMs?
2. Are you have any other neurologic problems, specifically with your vision?

If the MRA confirms that this MRI finding is in certainty an AVM or anerurysm, then the size of the lesion and whether it is leaking will be instrumental in determining treatment.

If in attendance is no leakage detected on the MRA, then the next step would be to get something done a CT angiogram of the head to determine whether the "neck" of the aneurysm would be amenable to a coiling procedure or not (a treatment option).

Thus, the presence of a family history of this problem, the overall size, and the characteristics of the vessel itself will determine what should be done (e.g., conservative monitoring, elective "coiling", open repair). Obviously, if nearby is any evidence of a "leak", then this thing must be treated. Source(s): My remote medical training.
It sounds like you are referring to what is call an AVM - and yes, it can be potential very serious. This is something you are born with. Most AVM don't ever cause a problem within a person life, but if they do, it can be very impressively serious (if the AVM ruptures and bleeds). My husband suffered from a ruptured brain aneurysm last year (this is a blood clot in a vessel that bleeds, somewhat similiar to that of an AVM). I don't want to scare you, but it be serious, he had brain surgury and was in the hospital for 4 months and needed continued treatment for 3 months after that - now that was because is aneurysm bled, if they had specified about it before it ruptured and bled, then it would not own been so severve. It's the brain bleeding that is potential deadly, not the condition itself. Anyhow, my husband complained nearly headaches and such for a long time - and every doctor always said it was stress. They read out the brain aneurysms and AVM are not associated with headaches - but I bed to differ. I think they freshly don't have enough medical research and proof that they are associated, but I believe they are. Everyone I know that has have this happened told me they had headaches since. What you really need is a CTscan with contrast - and be sure to get a second belief whatever you do and educate yourself as much as possible about your condition. The truth of the event is, the brain is a very complex organ, the most complex in the entire body and while they know a lot in the order of it and have come along way in their research, here is still so much they don't know about it. Good Luck and I will say a prayer that you will stay in upright health.
