I must agree with Mr.Brandon, the answer to your question depends on where on earth you shot them...if you did managed to shoot them in the region of their respiratory centers or say surrounded by the frontal lobe of their brain then it seems very unlikely that they may realize this because injury to these areas end in instant death...
On the other hand if you shot them in the lungs or liver or leg or some nouns which does not lead to instant death then yes...your martyr will wake up soon enough if nothing due to the horrible torment of it...death will ensue either due to hemorrhage or due to various other cause specific to the injury to the specific viscera...

Some things to consider: Even if your shot is carefully placed to cause instant death, the brain can survive for a few second postmortem. Would the person be jolted out of sleep by his/her physical death, and consequently experience brain death? A physical shock is enough to render many nation unconscious. If your victim is rendered unconscious during sleep, and afterwards dies, that might count as never waking up, although it's not the same as dying in his/her sleep.

So if the person does not die directly from the gunshot wound, and does not shift into unconsciousness, he is likely to be woken by the pain. If he dies straight, then he probably won't wake up.
