Just to clarify, are you speaking of assisted suicide out of the context of "Death With Dignity"? (rather ironic that it should be called that given your topic, eh?) I ask because you placed this in the medical category, and in a medical context, "assisted suicide" refers *only* to Physician (or otherwise) aided disappearance when the patient cannot end their own life. This doesn't apply to on top form (that's debatable too, since he had obvious mental illness) youthful men such as Brandes. It would apply to a person who's quality of life (due to the imminence of passing or serious illness) had declined considerably. This is illegal surrounded by most of the U.S.
However, in Germany physician assisted suicide is legal, if the person is acting of their own free will. In Germany, have free will is described as being over the age of 14, in a well state of mental strength (Brandes obviously was not), and not acting in a state of emergency.
Regardless of those conditions though, I don't see how this is assisted suicide, at adjectives really. Bernd Jürgen Brandes, it seems was obviously involved within his own mutilation, but I don't see any evidence that he planned on or wanted to die.
