Does drinking soda/beverages/taking beside food affect the work of antibiotics?
I am taking AZITHROMYCIN to treat an infection. I have a hard time of swallowing pills and these suckers are pretty huge. I was wondering if I crushed the pills up and put them into a beverage or something that I'm drinking....will my antibiotic still work and have the same effectiveness? Do you hold any other suggestions on how I can avoid having to swallow these pills whole?
Answers:
You will be fine dissolving this in a beverage. The aqueous solubility of azithromycin at pH 7.4 at 37°C is 39mg/ml, so it should dissolve.
Also, the incorporation is shown to only be affected by a high pH, so avoid taking an antacid 2 hours earlier or after taking it.
Azithromycin is stable and non-reactive except when exposed to strong oxidizers, so the drug will remain intact in solution. Source(s): http://www.chemicalbook.com/ProductMSDSDetailCB1442887_EN.htm

Zithromax (azithromycin) is available in a suspension formulation. Contact your doctor, explain what's happening and ask to be switched to the suspension. Mixing the contents of the tablet into any liquid will result in a foul tasting concoction. Source(s): Pharmacist
