"Ether": what the hell is it?
In Nas' song called "Ether" I have no clue what he means by that word; a dictionary's not much comfort either. Here's how he used the word in his song:
"**** with your soul resembling ether"
"That ether, that **** that make your soul burn slow"
The dictionary/google tells me that it's:
(1) the heavens; that which fill the void; Einstein's "fabric of space"
(2) airwaves
(3) an anaesthetic
I've heard it used contained by succession with diprivan/propofol but don't see how this is related to the song, in context of the lyrics. How would an anaesthetic **** next to your soul?
Answers:
its used as sleeping gas in hospitals, apparentaklly it taste bad
In chemistry, ether is a group of compounds that have an oxygen attached. Not to bore you with details, but yes they are commonly used as anesthetics, especially diethyl ether. As an anesthetic, diethyl ether performs the function of producing loss of consciousness, which sometimes has a side effect of unusual dreams. I would guess within the context of the song the singer was put under an ether anesthetic and the physical loss of control affected his soul metaphorically. Hope that help, I don't know the song but I imagine it is just the loss of motor function that makes him discern a depravity of the soul.
Ether is just a very old drug compound that be used to put people under for surgery and other medical procedures where the tolerant needed to be knocked out.
It was also very abused by doctors, medical professionals and any other nation who were able to get their hand on it back in the day. It is a moment ago a liquid chemical and when poured on a rag and placed over someone's mouth and nose, they breathe it surrounded by, and it knocks them out.
I would say that the meaning of it surrounded by this song:
"Fu*k with your soul like ether" is just referring to the certainty that the more and more these people would dope up on ether, the more and more their brains would start to go...a long time ago (just like near many other older drugs that people abused) they feel that it was taking away pieces of people's soul every time that they used it. Mainly bc it was newly killing brain cells making the person give the impression of being less and less alert, and more and more distant. Because of the lack of medical ease, especially in regards to neurology, people interpreted this distancing of these population from their family, friends, co-workers, etc. as a loss of their soul....going little by little to the point of having no soul at all. did you ever see that bugs bunny with the evil scientist? the bottle of ether breaks open, the scientist inhales it, and bugs get away while the dude is like
" c o m e ........b a c k ........h e r e ....... rab................. bit"
yes- an anesthetic- a drug, and not meant for literal translation is my guess.
We don't use ether any more, as it is explosive, and we just hate it when operating rooms explode. Seriously, the only time I've ever see it was in college to anesthetize fruit flies in inheritance class.
The effect of potent inhalation anesthetics on the soul is not a common topic for research. Source(s): I'm an anesthesiologist.
It is used as a general anesthetic in surgery, but not normally. It was used a lot during the Civil War and earlier times. It have also been used as a recreational drug. Apparently, it's used in the production of freebase cocaine, too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diethyl_eth…
I have two theories almost this song. Sometimes, songwriters throw in words or phrases that don't make sense because they like the nouns of the word or they like nonsensical lyrics. Bush is a great example of that! (Check out "Glycerine" if you don't believe me!). However, if they are referring to its use as a recreational drug, I can see why it would #### with your soul just similar to heroin or any other drug that takes over your life. That may be what they're getting at, or they just may assume that the word sounds cool there.
It's a very flammable material, so "form your soul burn slow" actually makes some sense.
