I am a sitter for a forgiving contained by the hospital who is suppose to contribute medication to the long-suffering?

the patient is suppose to be given metamucil for stomach pain and the nurse asked me to give it to the merciful
Answers:
Well since that is an OTC drug and not an Rx drug, then technically you can give the drug to the personage. However, the company in which you work for, as well as the nurse, may have set rules a guidlines for adjectives dispencing of medication, be it Rx or OTC and in that case you would need to consult beside your direct supervisor, the nurses direct supervisor or the guidlines for the dispensing of medication.

You do not have to have any licenses to dispense OTC medication though, if you did then we would all be screwed, as I know I would have be upset if my Mom could not have given me Tylenol when I had a fever as a child, or I could not tender a friend Ibuprofen when they had a bad headache. You also do not have to be a medical professional to distribute someone their Rx drugs either. If a doctor has given an elderly patient or a ped long-suffering an Rx medication, and these people are not capable of keeping up with their meds themselves, consequently it is very common for family and/or caregivers to provide them their meds every day. My Dad takes many OTC and Rx drugs and he have short term memory loss and my mom gives him his meds every day and ther is nought illegal about it.

If you do not feel comfortable beside giving the patient medicine, then do not do it time of year. As there are OTC drugs that can interfere with Rx drugs, and patients do sometimes have allergies. If it be me I would just tell the nurse that you do not feel comfortable giving the merciful the meds without something in writing stating that this has be prescribed treatment by a doctor, PA or Nurse Practicioner and in what dosage and is ok to be given to this patient. That way if any complications be to arrise, then it would relive you of any liability. Source(s): Toxicologist
If you are a licensed professional, than you can give it. If not, the nurse is signing she gave it, than label her give it. You are a sitter (a companion) not a private nurse right? Let the nurse do the nurse stuff. Source(s): Nurse, I give meds when sitters are with my patients.
