The blood colour is determined by the number of red blood cells in the blood and by the amount of oxygen they are carrying. Dark blood will generally come from a artery and carries very little oxygen. Bright red blood will generally come from an artery and is soaking wet with oxygen. I say "generally" because there is an exception ( a bit complicated, standard terms is enough to answer your question).
The blood you are seeing is venous blood and therefore dim. there are some conditions where there is over production of red blood cell, it might be worthwhile going to a doctor just to exclude any medical problem.
