Most importent medical breakthroughs of times gone by 20 years?
I want do study medicine (2010) and to prepare for interview (hopefully :) ) i'd like to know some of the most important medical breakthroughs of the closing 20 years, i don't need any detail as i'll find that myself, but i haven't been able to find a site beside what i want, either full of recent minor discoveries, or old important ones, and i want something contained by between.

To add to above:
protease inhibitors transforming HIV from an invariably vicious infection to a chronic treatable disease;
angiogenesis inhibitors like sunitinib offering hope for the previously hopeless renal cell carcinoma (and many other tumours besides);
other drugs that have come out contained by the past 20 years and are widely prescribed include Angiotenson Converting Enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors) and Cyclooxygenase 2 inhibitors (COX-2 inhibitors);
and triple therapy for Helicobacter pylori (germ that causes stomach ulcers) have been devised by 1987 - not quite in the 20 yr timeframe specified
Tough to think of things that were definitely since 1989... here's a few:
Discovery that stomach ulcer are caused by bacteria and can be treated by antibiotics.
Development of RNA interference therapy (following on from discovery of siRNA within plants)
Application of most up-to-date molecular and epidemiological science to characterise and contain the SARS virus before it got out of hand.
Development of HPV vaccine, protecting millions of women from one of the most adjectives causes of cancer.
