Thoracic Mediastinum?

Is the mediastinum a cavity in itself ?
If the Pericardial is the heart alone , is that meant as a cavity or do mediastinum and Pericardial together , like one cavity?? Yeah, I know I'm confused! Oh and is the Esophagus be surrounded by what cavity?
Answers:
The mediastinum is not a single, physical walled-off compartment. It is just an anatomical description of all thoracic contents between the lungs.

This is in contrast to the pericardium, which is an actual physical structure containing the heart.

The oesophagus travels through the mediastinum, specifically the posterior mediastinum. Source(s): Any fully clad anatomy textbook.
no... not a cavity.a space actually. esophagus is located n mediastinum. pericardial is actually a coverage of connective tissue which coats the heart! I didn't comprehend what u really meant! ;)
