I'm not exactly sure what you parsimonious by "genuine". However, there are studies of the clinical effectiveness of Acupuncture. There are to a much lesser level studies searching for the bio-medical process elicited by Acupuncture.

On the news a few days ago they showed a doctor that watched a lady contained by china get cut open without Anesthesia. she be having acupuncture and it was having a twinge killing affect. he talked about how it in fact affects the brain. the lady didn't feel the pain of person cut open at all, I think he said she be smiling.
I'm sure there are many genuine studies.
Personally I don't buy it BUT it seems to work for some people.
I don't know if it's "real" or just "mind power", but I own no problem for people seeking comfort in it as long as no body get hurt by the treatment or by refuse to seek other more effective treatments.
As a mater of fact I know that masses "modern" Doctors (in the US and other countries) use it as a complementary treatment for their patients.
