Using drugs and alcohol is common for people with bipolar disorder because its subdivision of how they cope with it. Someone would have to know the symptoms she is experiencing and the criteria that was used to diagnose her, contained by order to know if she was diagnosed correctly. I would say that similar to anything, a second opinion is always a good impression. Her treatment could have a significant impact on her life. She needs the inference of a third party doctor, who has no financial interest in her diagnosis.

It is said that some 80% of bipolar cases exist co morbidly next to drug abuse. This could either suggest that bipolar subjects are self-medicating or that the drugs are bringing out symptoms which the individual is predisposed to.
So its a chicken and the egg question, is it the commonplace course of the disease (bipolar) or a consequence of the abuse. Its really difficult to say, doctors still dont understand the genetic or pathophysiological root to bipolar. We know that confident drugs tend to help allviate symptoms, which suggest that it is a neurotransmitter based disease, or some related mechanism.
we also know that useing psychoactive drugs can front to physical changes in brain chemistry and organization, neuron connections and functioning.
I know smoking pot have been linked to schitzophrenia, and that if you are genetically predisposed to schitzophrenia, pot can bring on that behavioral profile. Unfortunatly its hard to read aloud, impulsivity is linked to drug abuse, this is also linked to bipolar, so their are frequent cognates between the two diseases, but to say which leads to which is still a question for investigation.
