The toxicologist may indeed be correct, but I read somewhere that it is a marketing idea.

Of all the colors, those like pink in medicines best. Blue is a bit yucky to drink, so is yellow. Black is pretty terrible, as is purple and brown. Most mints are pink, most stomach anti-acids are pink. The other option would be white.
cause im black lolz
because it attracts population to it
Bismuth is an element of the periodic table. It's physical properties from an appearance standpoint are that it has a silver color, near a pinkish tint. Since Pepto Bismol is derived from bismuth and because of the chemical reactions between the salicylic acid and the bismuth, the end product will hold a milky appearance with a pinkish tint to it. In formulations work, it is always easiest to go near a dye that is in line next to the color of the formulation you are working with. For example if you make a soap, and the product has a lightheaded blue tint on its own, then you will always look to go near a blue, red or purple dye because these dyes will cover and mesh with the current color. If you were to try to dye this same material pallid or orange, then that blue tint would not mesh well beside the dye and you would come up with a dish soap that had a very unpleasant brownish color. Since color is highly important to consumers, all companies, whether they make drugs, soap or candles are going to form sure that the product they produce is pleasing to the eye (even thought it does not impact the performance) just because they know people will not buy it otherwise. So all manufacturer of Bismuth Subsalicylate stick with pink and red dyes to go along with the already present pinkish color of the cessation product.

Also another note regarding dyes, is that not all dyes are compatable beside all materials. All drugs have to go through a large amount of testing before they can be brought to market. One of these test is the stability test. In this test the product is placed in several heat cycles and monitored for weeks (accelerated stability studies) to years (for complete stability studies). Durring these studies many properties are monitored, one of which is appearance. Some dyes can cause a liquid or suspension product to flocculate or percipitate out of solution and this is not fitting. So the dyes used in Pepto Bismol and the generic brands, are also selected based on such stability chemistry.

They adjectives use D&C Red 22 and D&C Red 28, which are both stable in the Pepto Bismol combination and are USP, EP, JP and BP approved.

Oh and Red is the most popular color for liquid medicine, as red stands out the most to customers and frequent psychological studies have found that people associate red with blood, duration and vitality. Source(s): Toxicologist
