Why is yawning contagious?

Why is yawning contagious?
Answers:
oh my god, when i read the question i yawned... lol.
There's a few different schools of thought on that. Some voice it's not and it's just coincidence. Others say that since you yawn mostly at night when you're tired it's simply the power of suggestion and that everyone around you was already on the verge but the one yawn just tipped it over the boundary. It's also somewhat believed that a yawn is you not having enough oxygen so it's an extra long breath in and a huge breath of CO2 out. This triggers a response within other people's brains that maybe they aren't getting enough oxygen either so they start yawning.

Really though nobody can pinpoint exactly what make a yawn contagious, if at all, but I hope this has helped somewhat.
not contained by my case..its rare for me to yawn Source(s): seriously

=o!

It really is people! When your mind is distracted and you see someone doing something in this case yawning you uncontiously dream up about or actually do what they are doing. Trust me, I do this a lot. Someone yawns and resembling the next 2 seconds I get a prerequisite feeling to Yawn. It's not weird o.O!! I think it is untaught and mostly has something to do with your state of mental awareness at that moment. =] Source(s): ;]
Looking at this question made me yawn, I kid you not.

I've commonly wondered the same thing.
It is contagious only if the human being yawning has some kind of airborne disease. It is a fact that if some one yawns the individual sitting next to him also feels like yawning.
I ******* lol'd HARD, at the first answer.
For the same reason you may feel a twinge of agony when somebody suffers an accident. The power of empathy is very strong. Additionally, wanting to belong to a group is very human. You could read out that the "yawnee" wants to join the yawning group. ^^
it's not..idiot
