What cause scabs to form?

Answers:
When you cut yourself or otherwise cause yourself to bleed, particles in your blood call platelets stack together in the wound opening to block the flow of blood (bleeding). Also, fibrous tissue called fibrin surrounded by your blood stream interconnects to help hold the platelets in place. When this dries, it forms a hard almost plastic similar to protective surface called a scab.

As the wound heals, the skin cells underneath the scab regenerate and the old cells are sloughed off. Eventually, the cell regenerate to close the wound and the scab itself detaches. You are then left with any regenerated skin or scar tissue over the old wound.
There are things within your blood called platelettes which bind together to form clots. Source(s): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platelet
