If a person is person given IV fluids only and can have nothing to put away, chances are they are too sick to have much of an appetite. A person can live a vastly long time without actual food when they are this ill.
Normal IV fluids with 5% dextrose roughly supply only about a third of normal on a daily basis caloric requirements, so it's common for people to be hungry, but it's also common for sick folks not to have much of an appetitite. It's best not to try to force any generalizations.
