There are 4 blood groups: A, B, AB, O
There are (for your purposes here) 2 Rh possibilities, i.e. Rh Positive of Rh Negative.
I'll try not to go and get too technical but the reason why some people can receive from anyone and others can donate to anyone involves antibody/antigen compatibility. Put another means of access, let's say you have A Pos blood----this means you can receive blood from another A Pos donor or a human being with A Neg. You could also receive blood from an O Pos or O negative donor. You could NOT however receive blood from either a B Pos or Neg donor NOR an AB Pos or Neg donor.
The most adjectives blood type and Rh is O pos-------O pos people can donate to Group A, B, and O, providing each one of those groups has a positive Rh factor. The personality who has Group O Neg can give to anyone because they gon't carry antibodies for Group A, B, nor AB-and since they they are Rh Neg, they can't present something they don't have, so anybody can receive their blood. Hence they are sometimes referred to as the universal donor.
Similarly, an AB Positive person can receive blood from anybody (basically for the exact converse reason I described above) They have (kinda) A Group, B Group, AB group---and because the O group can't pass along antibodies/antigens---they can receive from Group O donors as economically. So AB Pos people are sometimes referred to as universal recipients.
