Question for doctors nearly something I saw on a ChildFlight documentary...?

Okay, I saw this documentary and there was this little baby who have some sort of respiratory illness, like it was legitimate bad; she couldn't breathe, and they had to put a tube down her throat. They tried putting the drugs to knock her out in one of her IVs contained by her arm but for some reason it did not work, and they were forced to drill a hole in her leg to bring the drugs in.

Could someone please tell a curious student how and why this happened? I only just don't get how they could not put the drugs into her arm when there was already an IV surrounded by there. I'm sorry if I'm leaving out crucial information here but I'm just curious and I don't know too much in the order of what I'm talking about. Any help would be much appreciated, the more detailed the better. Yes, I'm a bore...

Whoa!! Maybe the IV tubing be clogged....but its weird they didnt start another iv somehwere else
There are lots of reasons why the IV might have inferior, the most obvious being that it got blocked. Also, within a tiny child, they can't run fluids in too fast, because the veins are so small they'd burst. If they requirement to run something in quickly, they do it intraosseously - into the bone marrow. The bone is rigid, so they can run fluid in faster. Source(s): I'm a physician.
When someone is in shock, and the venous system is not fully functional and therefore not a good abdication system to the circulation for fluids and medications, the bone marrow is used. The bone marrow is located in the center of the long bones and is very vascular and consequently you "can't miss" getting into the vascular system. It is used quite freqently, not only with children (they usually use the proximal tibia) or adults (I am seeing more into the proximal humerus, right through the deltoid these days).

It is simply standard of attention to detail these days.
