Stem cell research? pros and cons?
well my class has to do a debate and i chose stem cell research. I have done my research already but my professor wants us to be open minded and see it from other peoples perspective. so tell me, how do you touch about it? Is killing embryos really worth it?
Answers:
You don't need to kill any embryo.
During preparation of in-vitro fertilization (test-tube babies), several embryos are generated. Only one of them is used & the others are discarded. You are merely using the embryos that will be discarded (if you want to use they word "killing") anyway.
If we can stick to this protocol, researchers / doctors are supposed to use the ones that are designed to be dumped. There is nothing that they 'kill'.
But, pro-life people thinks that ladies might start off to produce embryos intentionally, if poor ones are offered money.
Even though, you know MR (termination of unconfirmed pregnancy before 6 weeks) is legally permitted. Stem cell research/treatment uses embryos younger than this.
And if natural life begins from embryo, why we should not consider sperms & ovum as the beginning of life !! Not using millions of sperm....will it be considered as massacre? (last one is only my funny inenvtion..lol)
they are going to use embryos which have been aborted- if that help, so you could debate whether this will encourage nurses to persuade people to abort babies if they are surrounded by poor financial situation or something?
One thing that few associates consider: Adult stem cells and stem cells from umbilical cord blood work for research every bit as well short the controversy. People act as if embrionic was our only choice. It beyond doubt is not.
Here is a quote from a website:
"Adult and cord-blood stem cell research holds great promise. To donate umbilical cord blood would be a gesture intended to help others and preserve life, not to spoil life. While there is a concern that success surrounded by this area might tempt others to try more earnestly for success in embryonic stem cell research, the downhearted reality is that the controversy is far beyond that point. Advocates of embryonic stem cells have already committed themselves to that course of undertaking. Further donations of cord blood and the accompanying research will likely yield continued beneficial discoveries."
