MedicineFreeFAQ.com is a great way for me to practice and refine my communciation skills. and to see how others (with better skills than mine) relay their message. not to mention, you cant hear me stutter on yahoo!
I have the ability to understand medical topics and translate the information into duly easy to understand information. It's something I do a lot of at work, repeatedly translating what surgeons tell their patients into plain English.
I like spreading truth, not misinformation, and there is a LOT of misinformation out here.
Like Greydoc, I often will do some quick research or refreshing before I answer, and it's suitable for me to get out of my anesthesia world and look at some topics that I might not otherwise read up on.
I also enjoy seeing what some of my colleagues here think - within are some interesting ideas and thoughts, and I can often learn from their experiences.
The main reason I verbs to contribute to Answers is a desire to educate and inform. However I also feel obliged to attempt to counter the colossal amounts of misinformation. Many worrying, inappropriate and downright dangerous answers appear in the Health slot every day, posted by the ill informed and the thoughtless. Some of the advice and suggestions could even result contained by deaths if followed!
Everyone is entitled to have their say within an open forum, however in both the Health and the Medicine sections the repercussions of the Answers provided by those who paucity the education and knowledge to provide correct information are so much more far reaching than in other section.
Sometimes I almost feel guilty when I come across a resolved question where adjectives the answers are downright idiotic and I have not contributed. My daughter once asked me sarcastically if thousands would die whilst I be on holiday without my laptop. Of course I am sure this does not happen, but I felt compelled to pop into the local University and jump online and check for disastrous answers most days.
There are a number of 'Top Contributors' within Health and Medicine whose title seems to hold been earned by the sheer bulk of their answers, which are often of an amazingly poor point, cutting and pasting from multiple sites without the knowledge and proficiency to appreciate, filter or understand the data used is frankly pointless.
On the plus side I have be lucky enough to be joined among the higher echelons of the true 'Top Contributors' inwardly Health and Medicine by Rhianna whose obvious dedication to the cause of spreading accurate education and information rivals my own. Source(s): GP for more years than I caution to remember
After 30+ years of nursing I cogitate I have something to contribute. Now retired I miss patients and medicine in nonspecific.
The site and the research involved in order to check if I am remembering correctly is interesting and it helps hold me up to date - to a degree!
Questions beyond the scope of my own knowledge are best disappeared alone.
I am sure some worried posters are helped with facts, relevant links and an understanding word.
A peril in being a TC is that people can be frightened or mislead by imprecise and unnecessarily graphic answers.
The question should be read, interpreted, understood.
The reply should answer the request for information without scaring the questioner or launching into long irrelevant descriptions having picked up the irregular word here and there.
It's all a matter of interpretation. Most of us insist on a visit to their own GP.
For some who do not have access to a doctor we can only try to give a hand as best we can.
I don't mind being corrected if I am wrong, neither should anyone else. Accuracy matters in tablets.
There are some excellent contributors in the health section. I own experience, they have up to date medical training and knowledge.
Together we make a suitable team. Yahoo! should be proud of us. I think we complement (note e not i) each other
Many abundant a pat on the back of each one.
EDIT
Only 30 minutes later and the thumbs down are appearing.
I like to take home sure ACCURATE info is on YA, not just 'word of mouth' or misinformation [ esp. drug testing/birth control/STDs ].
I also do research to learn more complete/current info.
I WON'T answer what I DON'T know.
And sometimes I learn from others too! Source(s): RN
I am a medical student next to a Hons. BSc. in Pharmacology and this term I am out of school so that my chronic twinge can be controlled. So I really don't have a lot to do most days.
But I hate disinformation and oversimplification. People regularly answer questions about medication from a personal angle, "Zoloft made me anxious no one should ever steal it." Telling people about medication, or medical problems from an only personal angle is never fitting. So like many people I try to in actual fact tell facts.
I do give opinions (not of late facts) about medications or medical issues, especially if I have be through it. But I never preach, I always say "this is my personal opinion" or "what I have experienced." I single use my experience with a medical problem to illustrate something or when the question is asking for personal stories. And I always say aloud that my experience is not the same as everyone else.
And basically I do like to ruminate that I am helping some people who don't know a lot about drug or who don't have access to lots of doctors and other medical professionals, or are just interested or are doing a project for school.
It also help me to pass the time. Source(s): I am a medical student at a university in Montréal, QC, Canada in psychiatry and internal prescription. I have a specialist degree (Hons. BSc) in pharmacology and I own interned under two psychiatrists, and one neurologist. I have also worked as a pharmacy assistant.
I've been on Y!A for a couple of years immediately. It's become rather addictive I have to say. I hope my answers are beneficial, but I also feel that I learn from this forum too. As above posters' have said, sometimes a grill often requires me to do a little research, so it adds to my expertise too. I've just completed my masters degree and this forum provided a break in-between studying.
I do spend greatly of time correcting the misinformation posted by the anti-vaccine brigade and the sCAM (Complimentary alternative medicine) crew.
EDIT
Nair: I think publicly humiliated is a bit of an exaggeration. I don't wish to be mean, but your cut and attach answers from wiki are in most cases not even relevant to the question. On several occasions I own seen you give advice specifically misleading and may cause unnecessary worry to the asker.- thats the main concern. Source(s): Cardiac Nurse
