Why is chloramphenicol not exceedingly dampen soluble despite have two hydroxy groups?
Answers:
its molecular wt is about 323 and is listed as slightly soluble. Look around for comparison with other mostly non-polar molecules next to only a couple or 3 hydroxy groups.
Dexmethasone has 3 hydroxy groups with a molecular wt of 392.47 and is insoluble within water.
Apparently, from observation, for an hydroxy group to get a molecule to be soluble surrounded by water either the molecule has to be small or you involve many of them. Source(s): USP, retired pharmacist
