Relationship between Partition Coefficient and Lipophilicity!?
Can Partition Coefficient be a measure of Lipophilicity?
If yes what is that relationship?(Probably an equation would help)
As we know for the drugs to cross Blood Brain Barrier they should be of high lipophillic nature.... so any relative merit for BBB?
Answers:
The partition coefficient between octanol and water (or pH 7.4 water, PBS) is a manoeuvre (an index) of a drug lipophilicity.
Drugs need a certain level of lipophilicity to cross (be permeable) the BBB because they must engage (partition) into the cell wall.
There are in-vitro / in-vivo coorelation (IVIVC) studies for the BBB (and intestinal absorption) and various cell-transport models and shake-flask experiements.
