I would similar to to be a surgeon but how?
im leaving school next year contained by may 2010 what do i have to do in collage, e.g. courses and other steps that could help me along the method. i was thinking of volunteering in my local hospital; would this help also?

check with the college you want to go to. you own pre-med, then med, then internship, then residency, and after you can be a full fledge doctor. about 10 yrs total till you are a doctor/surgeon.
but check with places like Harvard Medical and University of Ky Medical conservatory.

The university undergraduate medical training is not streamed (ie all students do duplicate stuff no matter what type of doctor they want to end up as).
Then you will do two years as a "Foundation Doctor" in hospital. It is at this stage that you catch into surgical training.

Once you are in medical school and a junior doctor, you will form a better idea of what surgical specialty you prefer.
Volunteering surrounded by the hospital would give you a good idea of how a hospital runs. I doubt you would see any surgery. I don't have a sneaking suspicion that it would have any influence on your selection into surgical training (at that stage you would be a doctor anyway).
