If taking Prednisone, shouldn't I be decreasing the dosage every light of day?
On Monday monring I had an astmah attack, my first one where i was hospitalized. The doctor at the ER perscribed me 20 mg Prednisone pills for 5 days. The intructions read, "Take 1 tablet by mouth twice on a daily basis for 5 days. No decrease in dosage or anything?? Isn't this unsafe? I have taken this medication on times gone by and i always decrease my dose... im concerned...

Do what the doctor told you to do. If you're unsure, then call and double check but until you have a PhD surrounded by medicine don't mess with your own prescriptions.
The root that the dose is usually tapered is because prolonged exposure to corticosteroids suppresses your adrenal glands and makes them smaller. So when people who cart prednisone for a long time (weeks) stop it abruptly, they can be unable to maintain their blood pressure and other body functions.
Five days at 20mg a time is probably not long enough or high enough a dose to rationale adrenal insufficiency (see link), so stopping it is fine. Source(s): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prednisone#…
Steroids only entail to be tapered if you are taking a large dose for a long period of time because suddenly stopping the steroids can mete out adrenal insufficiency.
20 mg for 5 days is a small dose and should not mess with your adrenals. You can double check with the doctor or pharmacist to ease you mind however it should not pose a problem.
Do you have a PhD? Honestly. If you want to be an idiot DON'T do what it say ON THE LABEL. If you have questions, CALL YOUR DANG DOCTOR ALREADY!! Ugh.
