Why can't I drink while taking metronidazole?

Why can't i drink alcohol while taking metronidazole? What will happen to me if i do drink while taking it?
Answers:
Yeah, basically, metronidazole mimics the disulfiram effect and make you very sick when you drink alcohol together with it.
Wikipedia's not always reliable, but it's usually pretty accurate when it comes to drug info. It says you'll experience "nausea, vomiting, flushing of the skin, tachycardia (accelerated heart rate), and shortness of breath.Consumption of alcohol should be avoided by patients during systemic metronidazole therapy and for at lowest 48 hours after completion of treatment." That won't feel too good. Source(s): Wikipedia
Metronidazole is structurally closely related to a drug called antabuse. Antabuse is usually taken by alcoholics, and reacts beside the alcohol to create a terrible reaction; it causes nausea, vomiting, tachycardia, hypertension, and you surface pretty miserable, and may need hospitalization. Because metronidazole is so closely related to Antabuse, they share this side effect (although it is the desired effect of antabuse).

Stay away from alcohol up to 2 days after your last pill, it is not a pleasant impulse. Source(s): I'm an ER nurse, and I have seen this reaction up to that time, not fun!
