Why do I hold to hang around 5 years after taking steroids formerly I can donate blood again?

I'm currently oral steroids for ITP (low platelets) and have been told by the blood people that I own to be off them for 5 years before I can donate again. Anyone know why this is? I'm intrigued!

I'm taking prednisolone and it suppresses the immune system (as my immune system thinks that my platelets are a virus, and keep destroying them).

Oh I did not know that and I nick those steroids regular for my asthma, they have neva told me that b4!
You can't donate for the REASON you are taking opiates - low platelets. Donating your blood will not abet as much [ if at all ] than a donation from a person with 'healthy' blood. Source(s): RN and blood drive supervisor
Because steroids is a hormone that stays in the bloodstream for about 5 years and if someone who reacts scantily to steroids, or has taken too many in the recent past, or is very sick and needs 100% healthy blood, could thoroughly likely die. Anyway have to go brimming with to the rafters is on. Probably more behind the blood donor thing but I can't be bothered to look it up right presently and will forget to answer later and so answering with what I know now.
for their safety
