What are the roles, duties and responsibilities of a licensed practical nurse?

Answers:
The scope of practice for any nurse, whether it be LPN, RN or advanced practice nurse, is totally dependent on the state you live in. The Board of Nursing website for your state should have guidelines outlining what your height can and cannot do.

For example, I am in Mississippi, and an LPN can do most things and RN can with the exceptions of IV push, administering blood, and performing an initial assessment.

LPNs can do pretty much anything else: NG tubes, Foley catheters, bolus/PEG tube feedings, subcutaneous an IM injections, drawing blood, collecting specimens, give meds, give somebody a lift vital signs, care for patient's hygeine needs, adapt dressings, and much much more.

Their role with regard to accountability and decision-making is a bit different from the RN. In most states, LPNs cannot perform nursing interventions without first reporting their findings as RNs can. At the end of the afternoon, the RN is held responsible for the patient/carrying out orders and delegating tasks. The LPN is not (legally). Most of them are just as competent as the RNs but for more and RNs often view seasoned LPNs as peers and highly helpfulness and seek their advice. They are most certainly NOT "RNs slaves" who win stuck doing medial tasks as people often mistakingly think.

The role differences lies contained by the legal realm. Source(s): RN
