Which is worse Asystole or Ventrical Fibrillation?
Was wondering which was worse I think V-FIB is worse...
Answers:
They are both doomed to failure, but asystole is worse. The heart is not pumping at all. In v fib the heart is still sending out signals and trying to continue to pump, but it is not effective at getting blood through the body.
Asystole is the unreality of any electrical activity in the heart. Unless the cause can be determined and corrected vigorously the possibility of survival is very small. V-fib on the other hand is the chaotic electrical amusement of the heart. If treated promptly by defibrillation the probability of the return of a organized electrical rhythm and subsequent effective heart beat is possible. The odds of surviving from V-fib are much greater than surviving from asystole.
Troy is completely right. You always hope that asystole is just a outstandingly "fine v-fib", so that you can shock it.
Both have dismal prognoses.
Agree next to the others. However - asystole could be the result of a technical malfunction or a missing lead. Just something to expect about.
Asystole. That is the complete lack of any electrical abnormality, and the likelihood of converting that back to a sinus rhythm are far worse than V-fib, which isn't good odds any. V-fib can be converted with a shock, where as asystole you hope the patient go into V-fib so you can at least do something besides CPR and administer medications that do very little.
