If a cell in a lung has some sort of mutation what will happen? Will the cell freshly die off or will it cause a tumor?

It all depends on what description of mutation occurs (how it affects the gene product) and where it occurs (in what gene). Most mutations (DNA changes) that ensue affect only introns and other insignificant DNA sequences that don't code for any real gene product.
