Is it ok for my friend to smoke while taking Warfarin?

Can't really find any info about it and the doctors never told her not to? :-)
Answers:
Well after taking a quick look,

Im sure it wouldn't hurt the drug Wayfaring is primarily used as a Blood Thinning agent, so it should be fine

But beside any Blood thinner you must be care to follow dose instructions and be careful with any voluminous cuts you receive the blood thinners can reduce the body's clotting time.

No it is not OK.
The reason your friend has been put on Warfarin is to correct a blood coagulation abnormality and to moderate the risk of developing blood clots.
Smoking is known to increase the risk of developing abnormal blood coagulation and blood clotting.
What this means is on the one appendage your friend is taking medication to prevent a problem, and by smoking they are increasing the risk of creating that very same problem.
There is scientific evidence of this, and I have attached a composition below as a formal reference. It may be difficult to read for a lay person but as a haematology scientist I can assure you this information is correct. Source(s): http://pats.atsjournals.org/cgi/content/…
It is still ok to smoke while taking warfarin, but that doesn't mean they should continue smoking.
I hold a copy of the BNF (British National Formulary) in front of me, and the contra-indications for taking warfarin are:
Peptic ulcer
Severe hypertension (high blood pressure)
Bacterial endocarditis
Pregnancy

One of the major adverse side effects of taking oral anticougulants similar to warfarin is haemorrhage. I'm sure your friend's doctor will be assessing this regularly. Although, i do reccomment that if your friend ever has to go into hospital, she reminds/ tells them that she is taking warfarin.

Smoking is a potentially lethal condition, contagious by example, damaging to developing embryos, and transmitted culturally from one generation to another

So it's not okay for your friend to smoke at any time. End of story.
Well, despise to be so direct. But there are a few reasons a patient is put on that medication.

So if she continues to smoke, contained by a long run, she's wasting her money on it. She can save it by buying more cigarettes. Source(s): Am a nurse.
