What is the difference between aspirin and non- aspirin?
Answers:
"non-aspirin pain reliever/fever reducer" is a common label given to over the counter acetaminophen (generic Tylenol).
The two own completely different mechanisms of action and are metabolized differently.
Aspirin (acetosalicylic acid or ASA) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It irreversibly deactivates an enzyme call cyclo-oxygenase (COX) resulting in reduced inflammation mediators (eg. prostaglandins).
ASA has lots potential side effects. It is not commonly used as a first line fever or pain pills in the US and should never be used on children.
ASA is often recommended to prevent heart attacks and strokes.
Acetaminophen is not an NSAID. It acts directly on the heat regulating center of the brain (hypothalamus) for fever. The pain relief appliance is probably also central, but there in no consensus on a single gears.
Acetaminohen has no anti-inflammatory effect like ASA or NSAIDS. Source(s): MD
Non-aspirin is anything else, from vitamins to antibiotics to opiates.
