UK General Anaesthesia concern?
I am 30 and have to have a wisdom tooth and associated cyst removed soon and will own a general anaesthetic although I don't know which one. This is the first time I have had any broad anaesthetic.
I am concerned after reading that sometimes a patient undergoing an operation can regain consciousness and feel distress but because of muscle relaxants they are unable to communicate this to the operating team.
Is this likely beside any surgery and what makes it more likely ?
Answers:
It happens, but it's truly unusual. Some hospitals use BIZ monitors to make sure that the anesthesia is deep enough, but masses anesthesia experts doubt their usefulness.
Muscle relaxants do just that. They have no effect on pain or consciousness. However, they aren't used on every surgery.
The biggest single factor is the skill of the doctor or nurse administering the anesthesia. Talk to him/her up to that time your surgery. Source(s): surgical PA, married to nurse anesthetist
