How does menthol work?

By what action does menthol clear your nose when you inhale it? If possible I'd like relatively a detailed answer explaining the science behind it.

Don't ask me - I'm in a hospital for retards and they keep telling me I', menthol. Don't catch it personally :(
Menthol's ability to chemically trigger the cold-sensitive TRPM8 receptors within the skin is responsible for the well known cooling sensation that it provokes when inhaled, eaten, or applied to the skin

Menthol have analgesic properties that are mediated through a selective activation of κ-opioid receptors.[2] Menthol also enhances the efficacy of ibuprofen in topical applications via vasodilation, which reduce skin barrier function.[3]
Menthol replaces the pain message with a cooling sensation contained by order to provide temporary relief from localised aching
In short, it doesn't do anything :D

Menthol's ability to chemically trigger the cold-sensitive TRPM8 receptors in the skin is responsible for the powerfully known cooling sensation that it provokes when inhaled, eaten, or applied to the skin.

I stole that bit from Wikipedia, but it's not the interesting part;

"Studies show that although nation feel decongested after using menthol vapour, there is no actual amendment in the nasal airway when air flow is measured objectively. In other words, the decongestion is a totally subjective perception, although menthol does reduce discomfort and the urge to breathe."

So while it's repeatedly thought of as helping decongestion, the idea that it's *actively* doing so is incorrect. It's merely the sensation causing you to decongest yourself, unknowingly. Source(s): http://www.scq.ubc.ca/dude-you-got-some-…
