How does our body produce vitamin D?

I know why we need it but how does our body produce it. I know it involves sunlight but how exactly does our body produce vitamin d

Hey Kristie!

That is a very complex question you hold asked. I will, however, try to explain it in the most simple way, away from all the boring medical details!

Vit D, is classified as a Fat Soluble vitamin.

Present contained by our diet, are substances called sterols, namely: ergocalciferol (in vegetables and plants we eat), and cholesterol (in meat we eat).

Now, these sterols are stored in the liver. When we are exposed to sunlight, the UV rays modify the chemical structure of Vit D via the skin tissues, in such a path, where the liver and kidneys will be able to activate Vit D for the genuine use in our body.

So basically it is stored, UV prepares it, liver and kidney activate it, body uses it!

The prime uses, quite simply, are bone health and immune system preservation.

I hope I was of back!
